Monticello has plenty to do this summer

There is no shortage of things to do in the Monticello community this summer!

As usual, the month of May here at the Express is as busy as ever! Pete Temple and I say every year that May is our busiest month with so much going on in and around the community. School is wrapping up for the summer. Graduation and Memorial Day plans are put in place. Community groups and departments are gearing up for the summer. We have two special sections to publish, aside from the weekly paper. Plus, we have our own lives, too.

The Monticello library has MANY activities taking place throughout the summer for all ages as part of the much-anticipated Summer Reading Program.

The library is also partnering with Parks and Rec and Jones County Conservation on an exciting outdoor program. You can read more about that in the June 1 issue of the Express.

Speaking of Parks and Rec, they just kicked off their eSports tournament last Friday night. The cheering going on at the Berndes Center that evening proved that the Mario Kart races were quite competitive!

Parks and Rec also has some great programming geared toward younger kids taking place this summer.

The Monticello Chamber is also planning for Monti Days in August, as well as a few Uptown Summer Nights scattered throughout the summer.

Let’s not forget the Great Jones County Fair, the always-anticipated Fourth of July Parade, the Wyoming Fair, and many other community celebrations and events…

Growing up, I always complained to my mom that I had nothing to do during the summers. That is not the case for Monticello!

I came across a list of 25 Eastern Iowa bucket list items to prove you’re a true Eastern Iowan. I scored 16 out of 25… Not sure if that qualifies me as a true Iowan or not…

   • Ate a tenderloin

   From many restaurants, yes.

   • Visited the Field of Dreams

I have to admit, I was underwhelmed by this famed movie set.

   • Bought sweet corn from a parking lot

   • Ordered pizza from a gas station

   • Watched a concert at a county fair

Have you ever heard of the GJCF?

   • Stopped at the Amana Colonies

   • Stood on the porch during a storm instead of taking shelter

I’ve done this despite being terrified of storms.

   • Checked out the Surf Ballroom/Buddy Holly crash site in Clear Lake

I highly recommend a tour of the Surf Ballroom!

   • Gotten a whiff of Crunch Berries in downtown Cedar Rapids

   • Pointed out a farm animal while driving through the country

   • Tailgated before an Iowa or Iowa State football game

Yes, I’ve crossed the line into Ames territory for some tailgating fun.

   •  Rode RAGBRAI or saw RAGBRAI as they passed through

   • Stopped at the World’s Largest Truck Stop in Walcott

   • Gotten stuck behind a farm vehicle on a two-lane road

   This is Iowa, after all…

   • Had to turn your AC and heat on in the same week

   • Sampled beer or wine from an Iowa brewery or winery

We have some of the best of both in Iowa.
