Last Sunday on Nov. 17, the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center received a special donation.

Air Force Senior Master Sergeant James Grant, son-in-law of Monticello residents Dennis and Suzanne Joslin, donated an American Flag that flew in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

According to the flag’s certificate of authenticity, on Oct. 22, 2019, the flag flew on a C-5 “Galaxy,” of the 312th Aircraft Squadron. “The flag represents the commitment of the men and women of the Armed Forces, the Global War on Terrorism, and honors the thousands who died in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, the fields of Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. Let all who look upon this flag be reminded of their accomplishments and steadfast devotion to protecting the freedoms our flag represents.”

The certificate is not only signed by SMSgt. Grant, but by Air Force Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ricardo Hiraldo.

SMSgt. Grant flies into Afghanistan up to 14 times a year to transport soldiers and equipment.

“This is an incredible item to have on display locally,” stated the Heritage Center. “Thank you to the Joslin family, and Grant family, and to all the veterans and currently-serving soldiers. Let all who look at this flag be reminded of their accomplishments and the steadfast devotion to protecting the freedoms our flag represents.

“This holiday season, take a moment and pray for our troops in their continued dedication toward providing the many freedoms we take for granted.”

The Heritage Center is open on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. and Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. The center is located at 211 N. Sycamore St.
