How many magazines do you subscribe to? How many magazines do you buy at the store in a week? A month? How many back issues of your favorite magazines do you have cluttering up your home?

Well, if you’re a card-carrying member of the Monticello Public Library, you’re in luck!

The library recently rolled out a new service through the free Bridges program that allows those with a good-standing library card electronically check out an endless number of magazines for free. Bridges contains downloadable e-books, audio books, and now downloadable magazines.

Go to the library’s website: www.monticello.lib.ia.us. Under “Quick Links” click on Bridges. This link will take you to the library’s online card catalog. Under “Electronic Resources” in the orange box, click on the Bridges icon again. Depending on the last time you entered your library card number in the Bridges system, you may be asked to enter your number. From there, the entire list of magazines available for online checkout is at your disposal.

The checkout process is the same as checking out/downloading an e-book to your tablet or device.

There is well over magazines 100 magazines from which to choose from. Some of my favorites include: “Newsweek,” “O, the Oprah Magazine,” “Reader’s Digest,” “Reminisce,” “Taste of Home,” and “History.”

With the Monticello Public Library looking at reducing some of the magazines that aren’t checked out very often, this free service allows patrons and users to continue to read their favorite magazine at their leisure. You’ll get the latest edition without waiting to check it out at the library or purchase it in the store.

Downloading a magazine eliminates the need to buy it, and then for numerous issues to get stacked up and clutter your home. It saves you money and time and hassle!

Now what about those who enjoy cutting out things in magazines like recipes or tearing out your favorite articles? Well, with this service, you can screen-shot those pages you want to save and you’ll have them on your phone or device forever. And as much time as we spend on your phones, it just makes sense to save that recipe on your device for ease of access the next time you’re at the grocery store to purchase the ingredients.

If you want to use this free magazine service but you don’t have a library card, be sure to stop in the library today to fill out an application to get your card.

The Bridges service has more than magazines. The wide array of e-books will have you searching for books for hours! There are multiple copies of new and popular books available for download so you don’t have to wait for the one hard copy to be returned to the library.

For those who travel, whether routinely for work or pleasure, being able to download books and magazines cuts down on how much you have to pack, or how many bags you’ll need to hold all of your books/magazines.

We are lucky to have a library that provides all of these great, free services to make life easier.
