Scoring points in 16 of 20 events was just enough for the Monticello High School girls track and field team to claim a runner-up finish in the Anamosa Co-Ed meet April 27.

Mount Vernon was the runaway winner with 145 points, but the Panthers totaled 89, enough to nose out Independence (87) for the second team spot.

“I was very pleased to finish second behind a very talented Mount Vernon crew,” Monticello coach Vallerie Lynn said. “For the first time this season I felt it was a collective effort between the sprints, mid-distance, distance and field events.”

It was the second meet in as many nights for the Panthers, who also attended the Center Point-Urbana meet April 26.

At Anamosa, the Panthers collected 28 points from the two longest individual races alone. Karle Kramer won the 3,000-meter run in 5:25.16; with teammate Katie Roher finishing fifth. And Monticello went two-three in the 1,500, with Emma Althoff and Kramer.

“Karle Kramer had a great night, winning the 3,000 and placing third in the 1,500. Reese Cox is also getting her hurdle races to come together.”

Madison Butterworth won the high jump with a leap of 4-foot-10.

“Maddie Butterworth has been finding her rhythm in the high jump. She went 4-10 both Monday and Tuesday,” Lynn said.

The Panthers also picked up big chunks of points in the relay events, finishing second in both the 4x800 and the 4x100 throwers’ relay; taking third in the 4x400, and fourth in the distance medley. Cora Mescher was third in the shot put.

At Center Point-Urbana, Monticello totaled 14 points to finish 11th, taking the opportunity to plug in a wide variety of athletes from its long roster.

“On Monday we took a lot of girls who have not had a lot of time on the track this season,” Lynn said. “This gave them the chance to compete on the varsity level and gave the girls who usually compete on the varsity level some rest. We didn’t score many points, but I was so pleased with the effort and willingness to compete.”

The exception was in the throwers, all of whom attended.

“Jordan Fangman continued to improve in the discus. She threw four feet past her (previous) PR.”

Conference meet

The Panthers will compete in the River Valley Conference Meet May 6 in Anamosa.
