Monticello School Board Recognition

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, The Monticello Express will spotlight a different member of the Monticello Community School District Board of Education each week during the month of May. 

This week, get to know Board member John Schlarmann. 

Tell us about your family. 

Our family includes my wife Jami of 19 years; daughter Kinzi, 13 years old; daughter Haili, 12 years old; and son Nick, 7 years old. 

How many years have you served on the Monticello Board of Education? 

I am presently serving my fourth year on the board. 

What has been your favorite Monticello Community Schools moment? 

I would have to say handing out diplomas at graduation, knowing how great of an accomplishment these students have achieved. We have a lot of great accomplishments at the MCSD to be proud of. 

What advice would you give future board members? 

Be open-minded. Don’t be afraid to give your opinion and try to understand other members’ opinions. Being a member of the school board has been a great experience. 

Where did you graduate high school and college? 

I graduated from Monticello High School with the Class of 1991, and attended Iowa State University for an Ag Quarter. 

Hobbies/interests: I enjoy camping with our family and friends, attending as many of our kids’ games and activities as possible, and taking rides with our family seeing the countryside.
