Monticello School Board Recognition

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, The Monticello Express will spotlight a different member of the Monticello Community School District Board of Education each week during the month of May.

This week, get to know Board member John Schlarmann.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My wife, Jami, and I are both graduates of Monticello High School. We have three children: Kinzi, 14; Haili, 13; and Nick, 8.

We operate a grain and livestock farm and Jami works for MercyCare in Cedar Rapids.

We enjoy going to our children’s activities, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

How many years have you served on the board?

     Five.

What is something you’ve learned since you’ve been on the board?

I learned that there’s a lot of hard work that goes into the running of a school. There are a lot of moving parts to a school district I would have never known had I not served on a school board. The teachers, staff, and administrative team are always looking for ways to grow and improve our school system.

What is something that you are excited about for the future of the MCSD?

I am excited about the direction Monticello School is going. The district has been recognized for our academic successes, and when we voted for a new middle school, it showed a large majority of the stakeholders support our school and its future. I can’t wait to see how our new middle school turns out and I think the improvements that are being done to the softball fields are going to turn out great.

What advice would you give to our graduating seniors?

Congratulations on achieving your graduation! I know the end of your senior year didn’t go as you probably planned, but it will definitely be unique and memorable. You have accomplished so much, but this is just the beginning for you. You’re going to achieve many great things in your future and make many new friends, but take it from an old guy, you will never forget the memories and your classmates. Enjoy your graduation and embrace your future!
