Monticello Scouting for Food, Oct. 14

For just over six years, the Monticello Food Pantry has been serving the Monticello area (Monticello Community School District) from its current location at 205 W. First St. (across the parking lot from First Presbyterian Church). Food pantry hours are Monday evening, 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday morning 10 a.m. to noon, and Friday afternoon 2 to 4 p.m.

On a normal month the Food Pantry serves about 60 families, consisting of 40 to 50 children, 75 adults (age 18 to 54) and 25 seniors (55-plus).

This service is made possible through the fantastic support that the people of Monticello and the surrounding areas have given to the food pantry. Members from the churches of Monticello have volunteered six hours per week to staff the food pantry for the past 25 years. Food and monetary donations come from individuals, groups, organizations, churches, schools and various businesses.

The financial donations cover the voucher program (milk, fresh fruit, cold meat) and the purchase of specific food items to stock the pantry.

One of the ways the residents in the city of Monticello have supported the food pantry is through the “Scouting for Food” drive that the Monticello Cub Scouts in Pack 66 and the Monticello Boy Scouts in Troop 66 have each fall.

The “Scouting for Food” drive is coming up on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Cub Scouts will deliver pink-colored plastic bags to your home the week of Oct. 9-12. On Saturday, Oct. 14 at 8 a.m., they will come back to collect any food you place in the bag and leave on your front step and deliver all donations to the food pantry where the Boy Scouts will sort and track all donations that are made.

In addition to the front-step pick up this year, there is a shopping cart in the entry of Fareway to collect donations for the food pantry. All donations made during this food drive stay in the Monticello Food Pantry.

All donations are greatly appreciated, below is a list of items needed at the Monticello Food Pantry:
