The bold type below tells the tale: the State Class 2A Girls Track and Field Meet will include plenty of Monticello Panthers.

The Panthers qualified 13 entries in 11 events to the state meet, and secured the meet’s team title as well, during the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet May 10 at Dike-New Hartford.

“Coach (Vallerie) Lynn and I made it well-known to the team that we had a (state qualifying) meet we thought would favor us,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said. “Thirteen qualifiers ties for the most I’ve seen in my years of coaching here at Monticello, so we are very excited for the team and all the hard work they have put in this year.”

At the qualifier, the Panthers totaled 115.5 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Dyersville Beckman (103) and 10 other schools.

Seven entries qualified automatically by finishing in the top two in their events, and the Panthers learned on Friday at seven more entries had made it.

Paige Holub qualified in both the 1,500 (in which she took first), and the 800. Gabrielle Guilford broke a 28-year school record, jumping 5-foot-5 to win the high jump event.

Other individual qualifiers included Rachel Larabee in the 3000, Taylor McDonald in the 400, Emily Schlarmann in the 3000 (knocking 22 seconds off her season’s best), Guilford in the 100 hurdles, and Jordyn Patterson in the 1500.

Two relays were champions at the meet: the 4x400 and 4x800, both of which included McDonald, Gabrielle Steiner, Patterson and Holub.

Other relays advancing were the shuttle hurdle team of Kaylee Stephen, Maria Recker, Macy McDonough and Guilford; the 4x100 team of Guilford, Maddie Lambert, Stephen and Anna Loes; and the distance medley team of Stephen, McDonald, Patterson and Steiner.

“As coaches, we always stress to our athletes that you should be at your best in the last two to three weeks of the season, and our team has done just that,” Reade said. “

Monticello will compete at the state meet May 17-19 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
