MPD sees a busy 2018

     Monticello Police Chief Britt Smith presented his department’s 2018 year-end report to the city council during their Feb. 4 meeting.

     Of note were the officer-conducted investigations:

     • A suspect was apprehended through a multi-jurisdictional investigation in connection with the Keleher’s Jewelry burglary on Nov. 30.

     • A suspect was apprehended through an in-house investigation in connection with the laundromat burglary.

     • A suspect was apprehended through an in-house investigation in connection with the storage shed burglaries.

     • A suspect was identified and apprehended for filling out fraudulent prescriptions at local pharmacies across Iowa, including The Prescription Shoppe in Monticello.

     • An investigation led to the identification and location of an individual responsible for a hit and run accident near Karde’s 151.  The person caused thousands of dollars in damages.

     • A thorough arson investigation led to the identification and successful interview of an individual with a subsequent conviction.

     In 2018, MPD officers responded to just under 3,000 calls for service:

     • Total traffic stops – 668

     • Total traffic citations – 221

     • Total arrests – 71

     • Total accidents – 104

     • Total EMS assists – 289

     The MPD operates with seven full-time staff and one administrative assistant. Officer Peter Fleming started serving the department in April 2018.
