Maquoketa Valley had a pair of meets, including its own invitational, to start out the new year.

The Wildcats began 2019 by winning two of three matches in a home quadrangular meet Jan. 3 in Delhi.

MV defeated Central Elkader 54-6, lost to Alburnett 54-18, and nipped Edgewood-Colesburg 37-36.

Parker Sternhagen pinned all three of his opponents, clinching the Ed-Co win with a pin in the second-to-last match. Tim Harmon went 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit victory. Michael Feldman was 2-1 with two pins.

Also winning by pin during the meet were James LeGassick, Carter Kruse and Devin Smith.

“Overall I was very happy with how the guys came out and performed,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said.

Maquoketa Valley then hosted its annual duals tournament Jan. 5, and posted a 2-3 record. The Wildcats defeated Midland 42-33 and Starmont 37-30, and lost to Wilton 42-30, Center Point-Urbana 45-30, and Dyersville Beckman 68-9.

Harmon went 4-1 for the day, with two pins. LeGassick and Sternhagen were both 3-1 with two pins apiece. Michael Schaul went 3-1 with one pin. Canyon Richardson, Kruse and Smith had one pin apiece during the meet.

“Overall I like the direction the team is heading,” Andrews said. “We as coaches are definitely seeing improvement across the board.”
