MV, Wall romp at Starmont

Maquoketa Valley came out of the holiday break and stormed to a 50-12 win at Starmont Jan. 4.
It highlighted a week in which senior Sam Wall was named KCRG-TV Athlete of the Week. Wall was honored for a season in which she was averaging 20.2 points per game and shooting 40 percent from three-point range at the break.
Wall had 17 points against Starmont, Taya Tucker scored eight, Emerson Whittenbaugh had seven, and Ella Imler added five.
“This for sure was a very nice way to start 2019,” Maquoketa Valley coach Scot Moenck said.
Wrestling
Maquoketa Valley had a pair of meets, including its own invitational, to start out the new year.
The Wildcats began 2019 by winning two of three matches in a home quadrangular meet Jan. 3 in Delhi.
MV defeated Central Elkader 54-6, lost to Alburnett 54-18, and nipped Edgewood-Colesburg 37-36.
Parker Sternhagen pinned all three of his opponents, clinching the Ed-Co win with a pin in the second-to-last match. Tim Harmon went 3-0 with two pins and a forfeit victory. Michael Feldman was 2-1 with two pins.
Also winning by pin during the meet were James LeGassick, Carter Kruse and Devin Smith.
“Overall I was very happy with how the guys came out and performed,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said.
Maquoketa Valley then hosted its annual duals tournament Jan. 5, and posted a 2-3 record. The Wildcats defeated Midland 42-33 and Starmont 37-30, and lost to Wilton 42-30, Center Point-Urbana 45-30, and Dyersville Beckman 68-9.
Harmon went 4-1 for the day, with two pins. LeGassick and Sternhagen were both 3-1 with two pins apiece. Michael Schaul went 3-1 with one pin. Canyon Richardson, Kruse and Smith had one pin apiece during the meet.
“Overall I like the direction the team is heading,” Andrews said. “We as coaches are definitely seeing improvement across the board.”
