MVEC awarded $10 million USDA grant

Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer announced a $10 million USDA Rural Development loan for the Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative to expand electrical service and install smart grid technologies in northeast Iowa.

The $10 million, 35-year loan will fund investments to connect 88 consumers and build or improve more than 400 miles of electrical lines. $6.7 million of the loan will go toward investments in smart grid technologies.

The Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative serves about 16,000 members in a service area of more than 3,272 miles across Clinton, Delaware, Cedar, Dubuque, Linn, Clayton, Jones, Buchanan and Jackson counties.

“Upgrading our electric grid and extending service in rural areas is essential to making every Iowa community a welcoming place to live and work,” Congresswoman Finkenauer said. “I’m proud to see this investment into the Maquoketa Valley and excited for the new opportunities the electric cooperative will be able to offer Iowa families and entrepreneurs.”
