Girls golf

     Junior Kelly Winter of Maquoketa Valley shot 101-96–197 to finish 44th individual at the State Class 1A Girls Golf Tournament May 29-30 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

     “We are very proud of the season that Kelly had,” MV head coach Tim Andrews said. “She has put a lot of work into her game. This state experience will only help her as she moves into her senior year.

     “We as coaches are already looking forward to next season for all the boys and girls.”

 

Baseball

     Four victories in five games got the baseball season off to a positive start for Maquoketa Valley.

     The Wildcats (4-0, 4-1) started their season on a positive note, sweeping a home doubleheader against East Buchanan May 24. MV won by scores of 14-2 and 13-3, both in five innings. The ‘Cats pounded 13 hits in the first game, breaking it open with a nine-run fourth inning. Tyson Tucker batted 3-for-3 with a double. Getting two hits each were Brock Hillers, Trevor Elgin and Parker Sternhagen; Hillers and Elgin had doubles. Tucker and Norm Wilson shared pitching duties, with Wilson working four innings and getting the win.

     MV scored 10 runs over the first two innings in the second game. Elgin went 2-for-2 with a double. Getting two RBIs apiece were Tucker, Elgin, Wilson and Sternhagen. Elgin pitched all five innings for the win, allowing four hits and striking out 13.

     On May 24, the Wildcats played host to Don Bosco of Gilbertville, and lost 10-6. Don Bosco took a 10-2 lead through six innings before the Wildcats rallied late. Tucker had two of MV’s five hits. Tucker and Willenbring were the Wildcat pitchers, with Tucker taking the loss.

     The Wildcats bounced back with a doubleheader sweep May 29 at Easton Valley, winning 7-2 and 5-3. The teams were tied 2-2 in the first game until MV scored two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth. Tucker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Heath Gibbs had a double. Wilson pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks, to get the win.

     In the nightcap, MV rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score two runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh. Elgin went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and pitched six innings to get the win, striking out 12. Wilson also was 2-for-4. Hillers stole two bases.

 

Softball

     Maquoketa Valley won three of its first four Tri-Rivers Conference games as the high school softball season began in recent action.

     The Wildcats (3-1, 3-4) got started with by losing both ends of a doubleheader at Center Point-Urbana May 22, by scores of 12-2 and 10-0, the latter in five innings. MV had seven hits in the first game; Rejji Smith and Cassie Westhoff both went 2-for-3. Getting doubles were Olivia Hoeger, Adrianne Supple, Taya Tucker and Westhoff. Rylie Aldrich pitched and took the loss.

     The Wildcats were held to one hit in the second game, a single by Smith. Allie Knipper pitched for MV.

     On May 24, the ‘Cats opened the home portion of their scheduled by sweeping East Buchanan 12-2 in five innings and 5-4. Peyton Ries went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in during the first game, while Maddy Anderegg, Macy Hoeger and Olivia Hoeger each had two of the team’s 12 hits. Aldrich pitched a one-hitter for the win.

     In the second game, MV scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead, and held on for the win. Payton Beaman, pitching in relief of starter Knipper, worked three innings and got the win. Getting two hits apiece were Macy Hoeger, Olivia Hoeger, Ries, Anderegg and Tucker.

     Cascade came to Delhi for a May 25 non-conference game, which Cascade won 11-2, thanks mostly to a six-run sixth inning. For MV, Tucker went 2-for-3, while Ries and Anderegg were both 2-for-4. Olivia Hoeger, Ries and Aldrich doubled. Aldrich was the starting pitcher and took the loss.

     At Easton Valley May 29, the Wildcats split a doubleheader, winning 10-6 and losing 10-8. In the first game, Aldrich pitched a one-hitter for the win. Smith batted 3-for-5 with a triple and a double. Tucker also tripled during the game, while Macy Hoeger and Olivia Hoeger hit doubles.

     MV saw an early 8-2 lead slip away in the second game, as Easton Valley scored four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Maddie Lahr, Ries and Smith each had two of the team’s eight hits. Lahr had two doubles and two RBIs; Olivia Hoeger also drove in two runs. Knipper, Beaman and Aldrich shared pitching duties.
