MV's Winter makes State

GIRLS GOLF

Kelly Winter of Maquoketa Valley shot 46-47–93 to finish third individual and qualify for state competition, during the Class 1A regional final May 21 at Lone Pine in Colesburg.

“Kelly has put a lot of hard work and time into this game, so to see her punch her ticket to State is a great feeling,” Maquoketa Valley coach Tim Andrews said.

The Wildcat team scored a 443, and finished just four strokes out of a state tournament spot. East Buchanan won the meet with 417, and Edgewood-Colesburg was second with 439; both will advance to state.

The start of the meet was delayed 80 minutes because of heavy rains.

“Overall I am very proud of the way the girls competed,” Andrews said. “We had a couple of girls who got personal records, and given the conditions, that is always good to see.”

Chloe Roling shot 110 for the Wildcats, Maddie Lahr had a 118, and Faith Hunt scored 122.

Winter was scheduled to compete in the Class 1A Girls Golf Tournament May 29-30 at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.
