MYBSA seeks volunteers for June tournaments

The Monticello Youth Baseball and Softball Association does more than oversee youth leagues, maintain fields and run concession stands.

The MYBSA also coordinates several B and C level baseball and softball tournaments. More than 110 teams from a variety of cities have taken part, or will, this year. Illinois teams have made the trip, as well as Iowa teams from such places as Davenport, Dubuque and Iowa City.

“This is a side that many people don’t know exists,” Bud Johnson of the MYBSA said. “It brings people to town.”

There are three tournaments remaining this year. June 2 there is a 10-and-under softball tournament, on June 3 there will be a 12-and-under softball tournament, and on June 9 there is a baseball tournament for under-8, under-9, under-10 and under-11 divisions.

As always, help is needed, whether through working in the concession stands, helping to prepare the diamonds, or other duties.

Tournament director Kendy Bohlken prepares signup sheets, makes up brackets, collects entry fees and sends welcome letters to teams that are visiting. She said funds raised through the tournaments cover expenses, but also go back into continuing to improve facilities.

“The part most people don’t realize is the income it generates,” Bohlken said. “It makes great money for us to put back into the community.”

Those interested in helping out at one of the remaining tournaments are asked to contact Kendy Bohlken at 319-551-1817, or at monticelloybsa@gmail.com.
