New counselor opens access to mental health services

Madison Roe, LMSW, is bringing her expertise to the Monticello area at the MercyCare Monticello Clinic. Roe will see patients at the MercyCare Monticello Clinic four days a month and will continue to see patients at Mercy Family Counseling and EAP location in Cedar Rapids the rest of the week.

Growing up in a small town in Illinois, Roe is familiar with the challenges similar areas face when accessing care. Few services are typically offered in small communities and are more commonly 30 minutes away—sometimes longer.

“I know from my experience growing up in a small town in Illinois, there was really nothing for mental health services. People had to drive 25 minutes to get to a doctor,” said Roe. “Providing that service here in Monticello where people can hop in their car and be there in five minutes, is really exciting for me.”

Graduating from the University of Iowa and then getting her graduate degree from Aurora University in 2022, Roe went on to work at Four Oaks as a an individual and family therapist where she saw primarily teenagers and other family members struggling with attachment, anxiety and depression. After working at Four Oaks, Roe transitioned to Mercy Cedar Rapids in the case management department. She transferred to Mercy Family Counseling in March 2024.

Roe’s services at MercyCare Monticello Clinic include adolescent and adult counseling, family counseling, anxiety, attachment and trauma, in addition to other areas. Throughout her time as a counselor, Roe has seen a variety of patients struggling with different situations. No two patients are the same, and Roe cares for each individual according to their needs. She is always willing to meet with patients outside of her typical scope to discuss the best care for them.

“I do recognize that it can be really scary to see a counselor for the first time,” said Roe. “You're coming to talk to a stranger about parts of your life that you may have never shared with anyone. As a counselor, my goal is to make you feel comfortable and to help you know that we're here for you and there’s someone in your corner.”

Patients can call 319-465-5937 to set up an appointment at the MercyCare Monticello Clinic. Appointments at Mercy Family Counseling and EAP can be made by calling 319-398-6575.
