A new school will strengthen our community

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

My husband and I have three children who will all be in high school this fall. They have been through the middle school, so while my family will not benefit directly from a new middle school, our entire community will, and that’s why I know supporting the Sept. 11 bond issue is the right thing to do.

As a human resource professional in the area for over 20 years, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to get quality employees when the community does not have good school facilities. Employees want their children to be in the best schools and with Highway 151 being a major artery in this area, prospective employees look to other towns close by, such as Anamosa, Cascade, Dubuque, Marion, as a place to live. Monticello, do we want to be mediocre or do we want to set ourselves apart? Do we want good families to live in Monticello, or do we want them to look at neighboring communities?

I firmly believe that school is where things begin to strengthen our community. It has a ripple effect to economic development, a strong tax base and housing market and just good people, who tend to care about their community and give back. When people are looking to raise a family and move to a different community, after the housing options, the school is the next thing they look at.

Our middle school needs to be replaced. The research has been done, questions have been asked, community input has been requested and given and – most importantly – listened to and a well thought out, fiscally responsible plan is in place.

The reasons to support the school bond issue now speak with a resounding effect!

Monticello – it is time! Join me in voting yes for a new middle school!
