No. 2 Don Bosco downs Eagles

FOOTBALL

Don Bosco of Gilbertville, ranked second in eight-player football to open the season, lived up to its billing at the expense of the Midland Eagles.

Don Bosco scored a 60-26 win over Midland in the season opener Friday, Aug. 25 in Gilbertville.

“We played an extremely talented Don Bosco team,” Midland coach Casey Hack said. “We battled hard all night, but we struggled to get anything going. Don Bosco’s speed gave us a lot of problems.”

Don Bosco scored 30 unanswered points in the first half to gain control. Midland had four touchdowns, three of them by Griffin Gravel. He had 77-yard kickoff return for a score, and runs of 17 and 2 yards. Britan Martens also completed a touchdown pass to Carter Mohr on a play covering 52 yards.

Total yards showed Don Bosco with 439, Midland with 342.

The Eagles were led by Martens, who completed eight of 12 passes for 140 yards; and by Austin Smith, who rushed 18 times for 113 yards. Mohr finished with five catches for 103 yards.

Leading tacklers were Fisher Bisinger with 7.5, Drew Gravel with six, Griffin Gravel with four, Hunter Rushford and Mohr with 3.5 each.

“We learned what we need to fix, and our coaches and players will work hard to get better,” Hack said. “I was very proud of the fight our football team showed.

“Our goal is to improve each week and get another shot at Don Bosco at the end of the year.”

The Eagles will play host to Central Elkader Friday, Sept. 1.
