Now, more than ever, our businesses need support

Express Editorial

We’re all experiencing a new normal, a new and different way of life right now.

COVID-19 has and will continue to impact all aspects of our daily lives. It’s especially hard-hitting to small communities like Monticello.

Now, more than ever, we need to wrap our support around so many facets of our community: small businesses, restaurants/bars, schools, grocery stores, medical personnel, public services (police, fire, ambulance), and the list is endless.

Due to so many state and federal regulations and guidelines right now, which are in place for the protection of so many people, our small businesses have taken a huge hit. We need to make sure they feel supported, despite many closures and changes of operation.

Restaurants and bars, while physically closed to the public, can still sell carry-outs and offer delivery. Be sure to patronize them when you can for lunch or supper.

Salons, spas, and barbershops have been forced to close until, at least, March 31. While you can’t actually get your haircut or colored right now, or receive your regularly scheduled manicure or pedicure, you can still purchase gift certificates at these businesses to use in the near future when they reopen.

While the Governor hasn’t asked that retail shops close yet, some have chosen to temporarily close out of precaution anyway. For some of these businesses, you can shop online. You can also purchase gift certificates, too.

In terms of grocery stores like our local Fareway, keep in mind their high demand right now. Fareway is offering special hours for senior citizens and those in need.

When shopping yourself at Fareway, just be mindful of others’ needs. We’re all in this together.

Aside from the business district, there are other ways to be supportive. The residents and tenants at Monticello Nursing and Rehab and Pennington are currently not allowed to see visitors. You can send the residents greetings cards to make their day. Several family and friends have been visiting their parents/grandparents from a safe distance, outside their windows.

There are lots of ways to still continue to support the businesses, services, and people in this community, despite the challenges that have been presented to us all. Our communities can’t survive if we don’t all come together. (K.N.B.)
