Operation BackPack Program in need of support

How can a child focus on solving a math problem or memorizing a new word when he/she is trying to ignore the persistent pangs of hunger? Across the country, teachers have found that Monday mornings can be a competition against hunger for the attention of their students.

Through the Operation BackPack Program, HACAP Food Reservoir is attempting to fight this battle in our schools. But they can’t do it alone. This is a call to action for the community, surrounding cities and counties to join the fight against childhood hunger.

During the 2016-17 school year, HACAP provided 99,720 bags (498,600 pounds) worth of food to 77 schools in Cedar, Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties. A donation shortfall last year left the program with more than 1,500 students without sponsorship and has caused the HACAP Food Reservoir to be in great need of financial support to not only make up for last year’s Operation BackPack program, but to ensure children who are eligible for the program (children on free and reduced lunch program) receive the needed food when school lunches are not available (evenings and weekends) this year.

As the current school year begins, HACAP looks to continue the Operation BackPack with plans to distribute bags of food at participating schools to eligible children (K-6 grade). A growing number of children on the free and reduced lunch program, means there are more students in need of food. Currently, it is estimated that 1 in 7 children go to bed hungry in this community – which is not acceptable. This is where your help is needed.

Whether individuals or community organizations wanting to make a difference or a big business looking for a cause, all community support would be greatly appreciated. During these uncertain times when many families are feeling economic stresses and federal budget cuts looming, food donations and funding are not meeting the rising needs of food in the community. There has never been a better time to support the HACAP Food Reservoir’s Operation BackPack program.

Please consider a donation to HACAP’s Food Reservoir and thank you in advance for your generous support. Visit www.hacap.org for more Operation BackPack program information.
