Even though the final score didn’t reflect it, the Monticello High School softball team had a strong game against Northeast July 10 in Goose Lake, according to head coach Bret McDonald.

“That was our best game of the week by far,” McDonald said. “Against Northeast we played really well defensively, and hit some balls hard. Overall I was pretty happy.”

That is, until a familiar 2020 nemesis made its presence known -- the big inning.

In this case, Monticello (2-10) trailed by just a run, 1-0, through four innings against the Rebels, who have posted an 11-1 record this season. But in the bottom of the fifth, Northeast scored five runs, on the way to a 6-0 victory.

That was the case in the first two games of the week as well, a 13-3 loss at Mid-Prairie of Wellman July 6, and a 10-1 home defeat against Cascade July 8.

In the Northeast game, Monticello had five hits. Both Jaelyn Aitchison and Mallory Steiner went 2-for-3. Steiner pitched and took the loss.

Opponents also had a single, big inning against the Panthers in Monticello’s first two games of the week. Mid-Prairie scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning before winning by 10, in a game that ended in the sixth inning due to the 10-run rule. Monticello had one hit, a single by Brea Stahlberg. Steiner started the game and pitched two innings before being relieved by Reese Cox.

Against Cascade Wednesday, the tough inning came in the top of the fourth, when the Cougars broke open a 3-0 game with five runs. This time, the Panthers had eight hits, led by Cox and Steiner, both of whom were 2-for-3. Starting pitcher Steiner was dealt the loss. Cox pitched the last three innings.

“In the first two games (of the week), we probably didn’t play as well as we could have played,” coach McDonald said.

The Panthers are scheduled to face Anamosa July 15 in the quarterfinal round of Class 3A, Region 7 play, at 7 p.m. in Anamosa.

“It’s going to be a tall task,” McDonald said. “They do such a great job. But if we play the way we did against Northeast, and eliminate the big inning, then we give ourselves a chance.”
