OWI accident survivor shares his story

On Thursday, Dec. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Olin Public/School Library, Philip Weirather will be speaking about the consequences and repercussions that could happen to anyone as a result of choosing to drink and drive.

The title of his talk is “A Tale to Tell.” He will briefly discuss his experiences with getting an OWI. Weirather will also discuss his two deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He will focus on his third OWI that resulted in his truck accident two years ago on New Year’s Eve. He was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Upon initial diagnosis from the doctors, Weirather was given a 2 percent chance of survival.

OWIs cause more than an individual inconvenience when one must be reliant on a ride because of not having a driver’s license, always asking friends and family to drive you to every event. Weirather will talk about other inconveniences and share the details about his accident and his recovery, including his on-going recovery with alcohol addiction.

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend.
