Panther boys are 11th in Baker tourney

BOWLING

It was as much a format thing as it was a results thing for the Monticello High School boys bowling team at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Baker Tournament Saturday, Dec. 21.

After the preliminary round, in which each of the 20 teams bowls against seven opponents, the Panthers totaled 2625, or an average of 187.5 per game.

That was good for sixth place in total pins. Unfortunately for the Panthers, total pins only served as tie-breakers in this tournament. Those who qualified as one of the eight bracket play teams did so on the basis of head-to-head wins.

Monticello went into the tournament alternating between six bowlers: juniors Jacob Farmer, Caleb Gillmore, Gary Pasker and Levi Temple; and sophomores Logan Farmer and Easton Lee. The Panthers came out of the preliminaries winning seven games and losing seven. Two points are awarded for a win, and one for a tie, so the Panthers finished with 14 points – 16 proved to be the cutoff. Overall, the Panthers were 11th.

“It was a lot like last year,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “There was a lot of strong competition there. I thought we went in with a better team (than last year’s), but we finished in the same spot. There’s a lot of strong competition there.

Overall, the coach said it was a good experience for the team.

“It’s a good tournament. It’s exciting,” Meyer said. “The place was packed with parents and spectators.

“We’re going to see a lot of those teams when we try to make State.”

Baker is the style of bowling in which teams use five bowlers, with each taking turns and bowling two frames apiece.
