Panther girls are champs at Fillmore; boys run fifth
Monticello handled the grueling hills at Fillmore Fairways quite well during the Cascade Invitational cross country meet Sept. 16.
The Panther girls won the meet, totaling just 43 points. Jesup was second with 58, and Dubuque Wahlert was third with 82.
Monticello’s boys, still working to get some of their top runners back from illness and injury, posted a fifth place finish.
The girls posted three top-10 finishes, four of the top 11, and had all of their top six finish in the top 20.
“I was really happy with the start of the race,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “We were confident we could win, and the girls took care of business.”
Emma Althoff finished fourth overall with a time of 21:02.7, and Karle Kramer was ninth in 21:32.7. Leah Koehler ran ninth, Ava Capron was 11th, Lydia Recker finished 14th, Marisa Kehoe took 18th, and Savannah Freese was 28th.
“Emma ran another strong race, and Karle has been a strong number two,” the coach said. “Leah and Ava are setting us up for having really solid third and fourth runners.”
Times are generally slower on the hilly Fillmore course, but Monticello did have one girl run a season’s best time: freshman JoAnna Patterson.
For the boys, coach Sauser said, “We’re still trying to piece things together. We’ve pretty much had everything thrown at us, but I’m starting to see that we’re coming around. I liked the way the boys competed.”
Jacob Miller led the team, taking 13th in 19:20.3. Grant Hospodarsky was 18th in 19:23.9.
“Jacob has had some really good times, and Grant had an outstanding race,” the coach said.
Walker Spence has moved up the ladder to be third on the team, taking 20th at Cascade. Alex Oswald ran 30, Ian Temple was 32nd, Dylan Ponder was 34th, and Carter Kurt took 35th. Oswald, a sophomore, beat his freshman time in the same race by 2:42.
Anamosa meet next
Next up for the Panthers is the Anamosa Invitational, which will be Saturday, Sept. 25 at Anamosa Middle School. Race times will be 8:30 a.m. for middle school girls, 8:55 a.m. for middle school boys, 9:30 a.m. for varsity girls, 9:55 a.m. for varsity boys, 10:30 a.m. for junior varsity girls, and 10:55 a.m. for junior varsity boys.
