Monticello was the only Class 2A school competing in a field of mostly 4A and 3A opponents.

And yet, the Panther girls cross country team outran all but one of its foes, finishing second in the season-opening Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational Aug. 27.

It was the highest-ever finish for the Monticello girls in the prestigious, annual event. The previous high was fifth, back in 2017.

The Panther boys ran a respectable 10th against its larger-school competition.

The key for the Panther girls was having a forwardly-placed top five, separated by 57 seconds.

“I was a little surprised by their start, and probably more surprised by their grittiness,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “We didn’t know how they were going to respond (against the larger schools). They went out there and ran like experienced runners.”

The top five were Emma Althoff, 14th; Leah Koehler, 17th; Ava Capron, 18th, Halle Recker, 25th; and Marisa Kehoe, 35th.

The Panther boys had an even smaller spread from their first through fifth runners, 37 seconds.

“The strength of this team is going to be getting them to run together and pulling each other along,” Sauser said. “Now we’re going to need that 1-5 to move up a little bit.”

Chesney Capron led the Panthers with a 41st place finish. Jacob Miller was 48th, Aedan Althoff took 59th, Alex Oswald was 62nd and Cord Nietert was 64th.

The Panther boys were fourth when split off into the Orange Division, which consisted of 2A and 3A schools.

In the junior varsity races, Monticello was seventh among girls’ teams, led by Mya Postel, 36th overall. The boys’ JV was eighth, led by Royce Kiburz in 39th.

Iowa City meet next

The Panther teams will compete in the Bob Brown Invitational Sept. 1 at the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City.

Start times are 4 p.m. for JV girls, 4:45 p.m. for JV boys, 5:30 p.m. for varsity girls, and 6:15 p.m. for varsity boys.
