Monticello’s girls scored a convincing victory to even their season record, while the boys were dealt the narrowest of losses as the high school bowling season resumed Jan. 14 at Idle Hour Lanes in Durant.

The boys’ teams for Monticello and Durant combined for 5,782 pins at the end of individual and Baker competition. And when after the final ball was rolled, each team had a total score of 2,891.

“One more pin over the whole entire day would have won it,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “I haven’t been doing this for very long, but I’ve never seen a tie (before).”

A one-game rolloff was required, Baker (team) style, and Durant scored a 194 to Monticello’s 192, giving Durant the victory. Isaac Newton Academy of Cedar Rapids had a boys’ team in the meet as well, which finished third with a team total of 1,614.

“We knew they would be a tough challenge for us,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “I thought we performed well overall. It’s how it goes. They gave us a chance.”

Levi Temple had the top individual two-game series for the Panther boys, a 214-214–428. Easton Lee had the high single game, 238, and finished with a 411 series. Logan Farmer had a 201 game in his 388 series.

Monticello came out of the match with a season record of 7-2.

Meanwhile, the Panther girls took control early in their match with Durant, winning the individual portion 1,370 to 1,159. Monticello edged the Wildcats in Baker, 569 to 558, to finish with a 1,939 to 1,717. Isaac Newton did not have a girls’ team. Monticello is now 4-4 after going winless a year ago.

“The girls are having a great year,” coach Meyer said.

Many of the Panther girls have learned to throw a hook, which Meyer said has begun inflating their scores.

“We have converted several of them,” he said. “That was on their interest level. We go to other meets, and they watch the other teams hook the ball, and they come back and ask, ‘How can I do that?’ ”

That, combined with the similar abilities of several girls, has helped the team’s improvement.

“We’ve got seven or eight girls that are pretty tightly bunched together,” Meyer said.

Leah Holub led Monticello with a 152-142 –294 series. Rylee Bauer had a 153 game as part of a 280 series. Two others finished at 279 – Evee Kourse and Louise Rydell.
