Panther JV plays RVC foes, wins four of five games
Monticello’s junior varsity softball team won four of five games against River Valley Conference opponents last week.
The Panthers (9-3) played a doubleheader at Northeast of Goose Lake June 13, and won by scores of 13-2 and 5-4. Monticello scored eight runs in the top of the first inning in the first game. Mallory Steiner was the winning pitcher, and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Tori McDonald batted 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple, and scored three runs. DeLainy Fellinger was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Hayley Manternach was 2-for-3.
Monticello took a 5-0 lead through four innings of the second game, then held off the Rebels. Kendall Ruden was 1-for-2 with three runs batted in. Emma Sperfslage was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. McDonald was the winning pitcher.
On June 14, the Panthers played a single game at Iowa City Regina, and lost 1-0 in six innings. Monticello was held without a hit. Steiner pitched a one-hitter with two strikeouts, but took the loss.
The team bounced back with a home doubleheader sweep of Cascade, with the Panthers winning 7-3 and 4-3. In the first game, a five-run third inning was the difference. Steiner’s two-run single was a key hit. She finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Elise Kehoe had two RBIs. McDonald was the winning pitcher, had a double and scored two runs; Fellinger also crossed the plate twice.
A sacrifice fly by Steiner scored McDonald with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth in the second game. McDonald was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs. Kylee Van Dorn went 2-for-2. Steiner pitched for the win.
