It was the kind of shooting performance the Monticello High School boys basketball team had been working toward.

The Panthers were 15-for-29 from three-point range, 27-for-53 overall, on the way to a 74-36 triumph in a River Valley Conference game at Tipton Friday, Dec. 20.

Justin Recker shot 11-for-14 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc, and scored 26 points. Luke Lambert was 6-for-7 from three-point range, 7-for-10 overall, and finished with 22 points. Tate Petersen had 13 points, shooting 3-for-5 in three-pointers.

“We’ve been waiting for that breakout game,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said. “We shoot like that in practice, but we haven’t been in games.”

It was the second of two road victories for the Panthers last week; the first was a 72-47 win at Anamosa Dec. 17. The results left Monticello 7-1 for the season, 5-0 in conference play, tied with Camanche for the North Division lead.

At Tipton, the Panthers scored more than 20 points in each of the first three quarters, taking a 64-27 lead through those periods.

“We just shot really well all game,” coach Lambert said. “Defensively it was a pretty good effort. We tried to press, but it wasn’t very effective, so we played half-court man most of the game, and did much better.”

Monticello outrebounded Tipton 31-12, led by Luke Lambert with seven, Ty Kehoe and Recker with six apiece. Recker also had three blocks.

Jeff Carlson and Brayden Cleeton came off the bench to guard Tipton center Frank Bierman, who had given the Panthers trouble in a district game a year ago.

“Both of them did a nice job against him,” Lambert said.

In the Anamosa game Tuesday, Monticello jumped to a 13-6 lead in the first six minutes, and led 18-9 after the first quarter. The Panthers extended the lead to 12, 32-20, by halftime.

A 15-7 run in the first half of the third quarter opened the lead to 20, and the Blue Raiders never threatened the margin.

“There was a stretch there where we played some high-level offense,” Lambert said. “We had some pretty passing, pretty plays and fast breaks.”

The Panthers shot well in that game as well, 26-for-52, or exactly 50 percent.

Recker led the Panthers with 22 points, shooting 10-for-12 from the field. Luke Lambert and Petersen each had 15 points, and Devin Kraus had nine.

Ty Kehoe had 10 assists and three steals. Luke Lambert pulled down eight rebounds, Recker had seven, and those two each had five assists.

“Tate was never really rattled against their pressure,” Lambert said. “I think the light came on for him in this game. He had some drives and no-look passes that were pretty high-level stuff.

“Defensively, Ty was a huge factor in that game from the middle of the second quarter to the end of the game.”
