The Monticello High School dance team will be among 264 high school teams, and nearly 5,000 high school and college students, competing at the Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association (ISDTA) State Dance Team Championships in Des Moines.

The Panthers will compete in three categories on Thursday, Dec. 5, as follows:

     • Class 3 Jazz, 2:42 p.m. in Hy-Vee Hall.

     • Class 2 Lyrical, 5:56 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.

     • Class VIII Pom, 7:48 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena.

There will also be competition throughout the day Dec. 6.

Teams are divided into classes based on school enrollment. They are evaluated and judged by industry professionals from all corners of the U.S.

“For more than 40 years, ISDTA has been promoting the sports of dance and drill team,” said ISDTA executive director Andrea Dana. “Like many of Iowa’s athletic tournaments, the Iowa State Dance Team Championship involves a lot of pageantry and tradition. But make no mistake; these students are here to compete and they want to win.”

Entry fee for spectators is $10 per person for one day or $18 per person for two days. A complete list of participating schools and a schedule of performances can be viewed at www.isdta.net/pages/resources.
