In a hectic three-meet week, the Monticello High School bowling teams saw one of the top Class 1A programs in the state at Camanche, held Senior Night Feb. 9 in a home split with Independence, and posted a pair of third place finishes at the River Valley Conference Meet Feb. 11, back in Camanche.

At the conference meet Thursday, Camanche led the way with 3180, followed by Bellevue with 3070 and Monticello at 2962. Camanche won the individual round, and Bellevue had the top Baker total.

Easton Lee finished third individually in the meet with a two-game total of 447. Logan Farmer shot a 409 series, and Caleb Gillmore came in at 408.

“We have great talent. We’ve just been one or two players short at a lot of meets,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “We haven’t found the right match.”

The Panther girls were solidly in third in the conference meet with 1890, behind Camanche with 2868 and Durant with 2230. Bellevue was fourth at 1326.

Emma Hynick led the Panther girls with a consistent 148-155–303 series. Karle Kramer totaled 253, and Marisa Grant had a 241 total.

“They want to get better and they are getting better, and they’ve had some great scores,” Meyer said of the girls.

In the Feb. 8 dual meet at Camanche, both Panther teams lost.

“Boy, were they good,” Meyer said. “We were OK, but they put it to us.”

     Camanche’s boys won 3422 to 3058. For Monti, Lee shot a 490 two-game series, including a 247 and a 243. Caleb Gillmore went 239-224–463, and Logan Farmer also topped 400 with a 226-210–436 series.

Monticello’s girls lost 2888 to 1891. Aubree Fairley had a 154 game as part of a 278 series. Kramer totaled 257.

Feb. 9 was Senior Night at Legacy Lanes, and coach Meyer was able to start all five Panther seniors, thanks in part to junior Logan Farmer, who volunteered to give up his varsity spot for the meet.

“He’s one of the top three players, but he’s not a senior,” Meyer said. “That was a tremendously noble thing to do for Senior Night.”

The Panther boys defeated Independence 3103 to 2896. Levi Temple had the top Panther two-game total with 209-244–453. Easton Lee totaled 405, and Caleb Gillmore shot 401.

Independence won the girls’ meet 2590 to 1860 with an ultra-balanced lineup. The Mustangs’ two-game totals ranged from 370 to 319, and among individual games for six bowlers, their highest was 187 and their lowest was 145.

Monticello was led by Hynick with a 261 series, Nora Sperfslage with 257, and Fairley with 241.

It was the final home meet for five senior boys: Alex Fagan, Jacob Farmer, Gillmore, Gary Pasker and Temple; and for two senior girls, Fairley and Adele Hogan.

Monticello’s boys finished the regular season with a record of 8-3. The Panther girls were 2-7.
