Monticello’s boys secured a come-from-behind victory, but the Panther girls were unable to do the same, giving the Monticello High School bowling teams a split of two matches Jan. 21 at Cascade Lanes.

The Panthers boys defeated Cascade 2583 to 2425, and the girls lost 1930 to 1793.

The Panther boys trailed Cascade by 36 pins after the first game, but rallied to win the individual round by 16.

“We fell behind early, but we knew we had a while to go before the meet was over,” Panther sophomore co-captain Caleb Gillmore said. “We just kept our heads in it.”

The Baker round made the biggest difference; Monticello won four of the five games for a Baker edge of 113 pins. It’s an area where the Panthers have struggled in some past meets, but in which they have shown great improvement.

“I think it’s the energy and team chemistry,” Gillmore said of the team’s Baker success. “We try to help each other and build each other up.”

Alex Fagan led the Panthers with a 394 two-game series, including a lifetime-best 223 game. Caleb Gillmore had a 372 two-game series, including a 206 game. Easton Lee had a 186 game that led to a 329 series, and Jacob Farmer had a 170 game.

The top JV bowler was Autry Fasnacht, with a 155-181–336. Will Dotterweich a lifetime-best 171 game.

Monticello’s girls were strong in the Baker round as well, winning four of five and outlasting the Cougars by three pins. But the individual round made the difference; Cascade won that by 140.

“I feel like both the boys and girls are getting more spares, and that is helping them increase their scores in Baker,” volunteer assistant coach Stacie Breitbach said.

Grace Heinrich had the top two-game series for Monticello, a 278. Leah Holub followed with a 241, and Maci Welter had a 239. Heinrich’s second game, a 142, was the team’s top individual game. Josie Brady led the JV with a 202 two-game series.
