Panthers accept challenge of 10-match week

     Monticello picked up three more dual meet victories last week while focusing more on gaining experience and improving.

     It was a crazy-busy week for the Panthers, who wrestled a total of 10 dual meets in the space of five days.

     “Throughout the week our main focus was to try and get the best matches for all our wrestlers,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “It is always nice to win duals if possible, but that can’t be our main focus right now.

     “We had different guys stepping up throughout the week. Even in duals that we lost, we had several wins throughout our lineup.”

     The most recent of Monticello’s events was at the Maquoketa Valley Duals Saturday, Jan. 7 in Delhi. Monticello won two of its five matches on that day, with wins over Midland, 39-33; and Starmont, 51-34. The Panthers lost to Center Point-Urbana 51-27, to Dyersville Beckman 49-30, and to Maquoketa Valley 57-18.

     Three of the Panthers went 4-1 for the day: Alaina Sunlin, Tyler Kuper and Gavin Holub.

     “Alaina Sunlin had a big win over MV, avenging a loss from Tuesday at the dual,” Luensman said. “Tyler Kuper lost in overtime against returning state qualifier (Eric) Heims from MV. Gavin Holub had a nice win against Starmont. Travis Heinrich had a nice win against Beckman.”

     For the week, Chase Luensman went 8-2 and Holub was 7-3.

     Earlier in the week, the Panthers wrestled in a double dual meet at Anamosa Tuesday, Jan. 3, and in a quadrangular meet Thursday, Jan. 5 at West Liberty.

     At Anamosa, the Panthers lost to Maquoketa Valley 69-12, but defeated Anamosa 51-24.

     Monticello won two matches against Maquoketa Valley. Gavin Holub scored a pin in his 170-pound match, and Chase Luensman won by forfeit at 113.

     Holub also won an 11-10 decision against Anamosa. Other winners against the Blue Raiders included Lake Stahlberg and Tyler Kuper by fall, and Garrett McCoy, Travis Heinrich, Thomas Broderick, Keegan Achenbach, David Bagby and Luensman by forfeit.

     At West Liberty, the Panthers lost three duals, by scores of 57-18 to North Linn, 46-36 to Cascade and 66-12 to West Liberty.

     Luensman and Achenbach provided highlights for the Panthers, both going 2-1 for the night with two pins each. Gavin Holub won by fall in the North Linn match. Mason Reuter picked up a pair of forfeit wins.

     “I was excited to watch Chase bump up a weight class and wrestle a state champion from North Linn. He didn’t win the match, but accepted the challenge,” Luensman said. “Lake Stahlberg wrestled three matches against highly-ranked opponents last week as well. We learn more from these matches, and that will help us as we move forward.

     “We had different guys stepping up throughout the week. I like the attitude of our team. They are learning to challenge themselves and they want to improve.”
