There was only one day of volleyball action for the Monticello Panthers last week, but it was a big one.

The Panthers (2-1, 13-6) played six matches, winning three of them, to finish fifth in the nine-team Lisbon Invitational Sept. 21.

Because of the odd number of teams, the tournament was played in an unusual format. There was first round pool play within pools of three, then second-round pool play based on first round results, then tournament play, which was a round robin, also in groups of three.

“Overall we got three solid wins, but I was hoping to get a big win,” said Panther assistant coach Kylie Nagel, who ran the team while head coach Stacie Breitbach was in Colorado for a family wedding.

“Many of our games were lost within the two to five-point range, so that makes it tough knowing we were so close.”

The Panthers split their first round of pool play, beating Calamus-Wheatland 21-15, 21-8, and then losing to West Branch 16-21, 20-22. Against Cal-Wheat, Jordan Kuper had 10 kills, while Tori McDonald had 16 assists and nine digs.

DeLainy Fellinger had 10 digs, Kuper had eight and McDonald had seven in the West Branch match. McDonald also made 10 assists.

The Panthers then moved to the second round. There, they were swept by Mediapolis 18-21, 19-21, and then defeated Midland 21-12, 21-12. Coming that close to Mediapolis – ranked eighth in the state in Class 2A was an achievement for the Panthers.

“To play a team that hasn’t lost all year, and be knocking on the door of winning, was nice,” Nagel said. “I think we were right there in that match but just couldn’t find the finish.”

McDonald had 11 assists in that match. Leah Holub and Fellinger each had seven digs. Carly Hayen and Kuper had two blocks apiece.

Against Midland, Kuper had 13 kills, and McDonald made 19 assists. Three Panthers served 10-for-10: Emma Hynick, Jaelyn Aitchison and McDonald.

Monticello wound up in the middle pool of three for the tournament round. They defeated West Burlington 25-21, 22-25, 15-13; thanks largely to 34 kills as a team. Kuper had 13 of those, Hynick had seven, and Gabrielle Steiner had six. McDonald made 23 assists. Defensively, Fellinger had 19 digs, and Kuper had 13. Kuper served three aces, and Holub served two.

The final match was against Lisbon, a 23-25, 22-25 loss. McDonald had 13 assists and served 11-for-11 in that one. Kuper served 10-for-10 and had seven kills and eight digs. Fellinger had 14 digs. Hynick had five kills.

“I felt like we adapted well to all the teams we were playing,” Nagel said. “We changed our defense to better adapt to Mediapolis and West Burlington. We also mixed up the offense, running different sets throughout the day.”

Nagel praised the play of senior Gabrielle Steiner throughout the tournament.

“Gabrielle Steiner really stepped up this weekend,” Nagel said. “This was the first weekend where I think she felt comfortable in her role, and really got more aggressive as an outside hitter.”
