Setbacks caused by illness or injury didn’t stop the Monticello High School girls track and field team from having one of its best meets of the season at the River Valley Conference Meet Thursday, May 4 in Bellevue.

The Panthers finished third behind Cascade and North Cedar, but had a number of outstanding efforts in particular events.

“We still had a couple key athletes dealing with some illnesses or injuries, but the rest of the girls, we felt, really competed hard,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said. “There were two conference meet records broken, five season-best relay times, and six individual bests.”

The Panthers broke River Valley records in the 4x400 (4:03.89) and 4x800 (9:32.02), winning both events. Monticello also had a second place finish in the distance medley relay, and took third in the shuttle hurdle relay. Paige Holub also was third in the 1,500.

“Paige really had a phenomenal night with everything she ran in, with very consistent times,” Reade said. “She knocked seven or eight seconds off her season’s best 1,500 time, and had a very gutsy split in her leg of the 4x4.”

Two days earlier, the Panthers hosted their final home meet of the season, finishing second in an eight-team field with 113 points. North Cedar won it with 125.

The Panthers double-scored in four events. Holub was first and Gabby Gadient second in the 800, Holub was first and Jordyn Patterson second in the 1,500, Rachel Larabee took first and Emily Schlarmann was second in the 3,000, and Taylor McDonald placed third with Sydney Ballou sixth in the 400. Monticello also won the 4x800.

“This turned out to be one of the better nights we have had to run in this season, and the results showed that,” Reade said.

Gabby Gadient, Ballou and Schlarmann posted season-best times, as did the shuttle hurdle relay team.

Macy McDonough won the JV high jump, and the Panthers were second in two JV relays.

“Aliya Merrill’s last home meet was one she will probably remember for some time, as she threw her two best-ever throws in the JV shot put competition, beating her previous best by nearly two feet,” the coach said.

State qualifying Thursday

The Panthers will hit the road on Thursday, May 11 for the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet, to be held at North Fayette Valley in West Union.

The top two finishers in each event will automatically qualify for the May 18-20 state meet, as will the next eight best from across the state.
