Heading into the lair of the defending state champion would seem a daunting task, particularly for a team in its first year of existence.

It didn’t seem to faze the Monticello High School boys bowling team, however, who competed against West Delaware in a Jan. 18 match at Lightning Lanes in Manchester.

West Delaware did win, 2997 to 2813, but the Panthers won two of the five Baker round games against the Hawks, and outscored them for the Baker round overall.

“I thought we did really well across the board. I knew we were going into the defending state champion’s home territory, and we actually beat them in the Baker portion of the event, so that was a huge accomplishment,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said.

West Delaware’s girls finished fifth last year, and had the individual state champion back on the team this year. On Thursday, the Hawks defeated the Panthers in the girls’ match, 2624 to 2198.

“The girls competed well. West Delaware has a great program going,” Meyer said. “And the West Delaware girls at the end of the meet said, ‘Hey, tell your girls that we had a great time bowling with them.’ ”

The Panther boys outscored West Delaware in the Baker round by 24 pins, and won two of those five games. But the Hawks controlled the individual round by 208 pins to secure the overall victory.

Monticello was led by Kegan Arduser, who totaled 427 for two games, including a 232 in his second game.

“Kegan is impressing a lot of people with his game and his demeanor,” coach Meyer said.

Caleb Gillmore totaled 400 including a 213, and Levi Temple had a 378, including a 210 line. Hayo Eiben posted a 191 game.

West Delaware’s girls defeated Monticello 2624 to 2198, largely because of a 319-pin margin in the two individual games. The Panthers won the final two of five Baker games.

Natalie Newhard led Monticello with a 297 two-game series. Cassie Gilmore posted a 291, and Evee Krouse had a 286, including a team-high 164 individual game. Keeley Anderson totaled 265, and Jordyn Patterson had 250.

Overall, the coach said he was happy with how the team has bowled this season.

“They continue to have really good attitudes, and take instruction well,” Meyer said.
