Panthers battle to win triangular

Maybe it wasn’t Monticello’s best, but it was good enough.

The Panther boys golf team shot 180 in a triangular meet hosted by North Cedar, enabling Monticello to defeat both Midland (196) and North Cedar (200).

The meet was held Monday, April 9 at the 3-30 Club in Lowden, and turned out to be the only Panther meet of the week, as two others scheduled April 11 and 12 were postponed due to poor weather.

“It was not a good day for us,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said. “We had a couple good scores, but struggled after that.”

Connor Lambert was runner-up medalist for the meet, shooting 42 to lead the Panthers. Daltyn Kramer followed with a 44.

“That was another nice, solid round for Connor,” Tauke said. “And Daltyn’s last two rounds have been 45 and 44.”

Ty Kehoe and Bo Kramer each shot 47 to round out the scores that counted in the Panther total.

“We need to work on our mental toughness,” the coach said, “so if we hit a bad shot, we do not let it balloon to the entire round. That’s hard for all athletes to do, but especially in golf, where you’re out there by yourself.”

Monticello also won the junior varsity meet – that squad’s first competition of the season. The Panther JV shot 227, Midland had 232 and North Cedar followed with a 248. Kaden Kiburz carded a 48 to lead the Panther JV.

“Kaden has made a tremendous amount of improvement from last year to this year,” Tauke said.
