A couple of dual wins, a couple of tourney title, and a historical milestone wrapped up the 2023 portion of the Monticello wrestling season last week.

The history came from senior Jonah Luensman, who reached (and surpassed) the 100-win milestone during a quadrangular meet at Maquoketa Valley Dec. 14.

“Jonah is having a solid first part of his senior year,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “This is a nice milestone in the fact that Jonah didn’t wrestle much varsity as a freshman. It shows the level of consistency he has had the past three seasons.”

At Maquoketa Valley’s quadrangular meet Dec. 14, the Panthers won the first two duals, 62-18 over North Linn and 45-24 over Starmont, before losing 48-24 to Maquoketa Valley.

Cael Sampson went 3-0 with two falls, all at 126 pounds. Tait Luensman won by technical fall and Jerin McElmeel won by decision against North Linn.

Excluding forfeits, other Panther wins against Starmont included Dylan Monk, A.J. Phelps and Mace Schnoor, all by fall; and Jonah Luensman by decision.

“Thursday was a last-minute add-in (meet), and another opportunity to get some matches under our belts, even with a limited team,” coach Luensman said. “It will be nice to put our full team together after Christmas break.

“Mace Schnoor had a good day and is improving each and every time he wrestles. Jerin McElmeel and Tyler Eastin had nice wins against North Linn as well.”

On Dec. 16, the Panthers brought six wrestlers to the Doug Guilford Invitational at Starmont of Arlington.

The Panthers came away with two individual championships; Jonah Luensman ran his season record to 19-0 by winning the 120-pound division, which two pins and an 8-3 decision. Dylan Monk, at 190, won the title with three falls, and is 18-1 on the season.

“Dylan and Jonah stayed consistent,” the coach said. “They are sticking to their offense and attacking throughout their matches. Both wrestlers really dominated and took care of business.”

Monticello also had a fourth place finish from Phelps and a sixth place from Sampson.

The Panthers were eighth as a team.

“We went in shorthanded due to some injuries and sickness, but competed hard,” coach Luensman said. “We had five scoring wrestlers, two champs, and everyone won some matches.”

The Panthers are off now until a Jan. 4 meet at West Liberty.
