Panthers close week with three straight wins
Monticello closed a five-game week of high school softball with three straight wins, boosting its early-season record to 5-2, including 3-1 in the River Valley Conference North Division.
Other than one game against Anamosa, the Panthers have won or been competitive in every game.
“If you do that night in and night out, you’re doing the right things,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said.
The latter two wins came in Central City’s three-team, round robin tournament June 3. The Panthers dispatched Lone Tree 12-0 in four innings, as Jordan Fangmann pitched a one-hitter; and then scored a 5-2 win over Central City.
Fangmann struck out six in the Lone Tree game.
“She did a great job of controlling the plate,” coach McDonald said.
The Panthers led just 2-0 through two innings, but scored three in the third inning and seven in the fourth to end the game with the four-inning, 12-run rule.
The Panthers collected 12 hits. Brea Stahlberg batted 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Also getting two hits apiece were Fangmann, Madilynn Kromminga and Keziah McQuillen. Lauren Verhagen drove in three runs, and Fangmann knocked in two. Kaite Roher hit a triple.
All of the scoring in the Central City game came in the first inning. The Wildcats took an early 2-0 lead, but Monticello answered with five in its half. McQuillen had an RBI triple, and Stahlberg hit an RBI double in the inning.
Stahlberg pitched the entire game, allowing seven hits and striking out four, to get the win.
“Brea did a great job,” the coach said. “She battled out of some bases-loaded situations.”
Kinzi Schlarmann went 2-for-3 and had three stolen bases.
“Kinzi did a good job in the outfield, and Lauren Verhagen did a good job behind the plate for us,” McDonald said.
Monticello started the week May 30 with a 2-0 home loss to Benton Community in a non-conference game. The Panthers outhit the Bobcats 8-4, but couldn’t push a run across. Fangmann pitched six innings of four-hit ball, but took the loss. Stahlberg pitched the seventh inning.
“I thought that was a very well-played softball game by both teams,” coach McDonald said. “They made a couple of plays we didn’t, and that was difference in the game.”
Jaelyn Aitchison and Roher each went 2-for-3.
Then came a home doubleheader against neighboring rival Anamosa June 1. The Blue Raiders’ star pitcher, Emily Watters, held Monti to just one hit – a double by Sami McElmeel – in an 11-1, five-inning Anamosa win.
“I didn’t feel like we were ever in that game,” the coach said, “in any aspect of the game.”
The Panthers turned the tables in the second game, however, taking a 9-2 lead through five innings and holding on to win 9-7.
Monticello scored five runs in the first inning, thanks mostly to a three-run homer by McQuillen.
“That was a big difference in the game,” the coach said.
Then, a two-run double by Kromminga keyed a three-run fifth for the Panthers.
McQuillen and Fangmann each batted 2-for-3. Aitchison had a double. Fangmann pitched six innings to get the win. Stahlberg earned a save by closing out the game in the seventh.
