A pair of 20-plus scorers, and a quick start, helped lift the Monticello High School boys basketball team to a 69-50 River Valley Conference win at North Cedar Jan. 15.

It wound up being the only game last week for the Panthers, as a Jan. 18 contest at West Branch was postponed due to snow and rescheduled for Jan. 31.

Justin Recker scored 26 points, and Luke Lambert added 22 for the Panthers. Monticello led 15-8 after one quarter, and 38-23 at halftime.

“North Cedar had been playing really well, winning some games and playing some better teams close,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said. “They have two really good guards, and for the most part we contained them.”

There were a couple of instances of the Knights closing the gap. They pulled to within five points with about two minutes left in the first half before Monticello opened the 15-point lead at the break.

In the second half, North Cedar got within nine, but again the Panthers responded, opening a lead of 22 points before finishing with a margin of 19.

“They were doubling Justin and making him kick it, and Luke really stepped up in the first half,” coach Lambert said.

Recker scored 16 points in the second half, including a dunk, for the second game in a row. It was his third straight game scoring more than 25. Recker had a team-high nine rebounds, three blocks and six assists.

“He was more aggressive and got to the rim,” the coach said.

Luke Lambert shot 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line. He also had nine assists and eight rebounds.

Jeff Carlson scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Devin Kraus had six points, six rebounds and four assists.

“Both guys gave us some really good minutes off the bench,” the coach said.
