In Monticello’s season-opening sweep of Marion to open the high school bowling season Nov. 23 at Legacy Lanes, the Panther teams exceeded their coach’s expectations.

The Panther boys won 2921 to 2394, and the girls scored a 2126-2002 win triumph over the Wolves.

“We still don’t know what we’re going to have,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said of the boys’ team, “but it was better than I thought it was going to be. I was pleasantly surprised.

“On the girls’ side, with a lot of experience coming back, we were optimistic, but you don’t know.”

The Panther boys dominated their match, winning the individual round by 527 pins and the Baker round by 144. Monticello posted a total of five games better than 200, including two by Logan Farmer (245 and 236) and two by Easton Lee (209 and 212). Brendan Pasker also had a 210 game, and Hayden Tomkins recorded a 193.

“Three of the five (Baker) games were over 200, and one of them was 191,” Meyer said. “In the first several years of this program, we didn’t average 175 in Baker.”

The girls’ match was closer; Monticello held a 147-pin lead after the individual round. The Panthers lost the Baker round, but by only three pins, as they secured a triple-digit victory.

“I was impressed with the Baker scores,” the coach said. “Last year, the first meet or so, they didn’t make 100 in a Baker game. This time they had some scores that they had last year toward the end of the season. They kind of picked up where they left off, so we’re really happy with that.”

The top two-game series for the girls were Emma Hynick with 170-183–353, and Maddie Parmenter with 182-153–335. Nora Sperfslage had a 165 game.

In junior varsity action, Cole Nietert scored a 180.
