Panthers fall to West Liberty; JV wins

GIRLS SOCCER

West Liberty scored five goals in each half, and finished with a 10-0 victory over the Monticello High School girls soccer team Thursday, May 11 at West Liberty.

It was a tough loss for the Panthers (1-7), who struggled on both ends of the field, according to Monticello coach Bruce Feuling.

“Our team did not seem to be as composed as in previous matches,” Feuling said. “Many of our shots on goal were from long range. Our defense was not as patient as it needed to be and allowed too many one-on-one scoring opportunities.”

Cassie Gillmore was the Panther goalkeeper, making 18 saves. Offensively, McKenna Bell had six shot attempts for the game, Sophia Ahlrichs and Isabel Williams had four apiece, while Lauren Kurt, Megan James and Shelby Hicks had one each.

The junior varsity game went much better for the Panthers, who defeated West Liberty 1-0. Brianna Koppes scored on a shot into the upper right corner midway through the first half for the game’s only goal.

Skyler Postel and Lydia Lange combined for the shutout in goal, with each taking the goalkeeper spot for one half.
