Panthers finish second at Lisbon before big week
Monticello prepared for a big week of matches finishing second in the Lisbon Tournament Saturday, Sept. 16.
The Panthers’ strong play – Monticello won four of five matches Saturday – might be a good sign as they headed into a week where they were scheduled to play Cascade at home Sept. 19, at Tipton Sept. 21, and in the Monticello Tournament Sept. 23.
At Lisbon, Monticello went 3-0 in pool play, defeated Anamosa in two sets in the semifinals, and then lost a pair of tough sets in the championship match against Camanche, finishing second overall.
In every tournament so far this season, the Panthers have either made it to the bracket round, or finished in the top two of a round robin.
“These girls really have the desire to win, play hard and have run, and I think it shows in their play,” Monticello coach Stacie Breitbach said. “The girls played really hard and left it all out on the court. Overall it was a good tournament. The girls continue to improve, and good things will continue to happen.”
The Panthers (2-1, 14-5) cruised through pool play, sweeping North Fayette Valley, West Branch and Camanche in two sets apiece. In five of those six sets, Monticello got to 21 points without giving up more than 14.
Monti opened with a 21-5, 21-18 win over North Fayette Valley. The Panthers had 26 kills in that match, led by Lauren Ries with nine, Jordan Kuper with eight and Rileigh Lambert with five. Maddie Lambert made 19 assists. Both Corinne Gadient and Maddie Lambert served 10-for-10.
Against West Branch, the Panthers scored a 21-9, 21-10 sweep, led by Kuper with eight kills and Maddie Lambert with 12 assists. Savanah Kremer and Ries had three digs apiece.
The Panthers wrapped up pool play with a 21-14, 21-12 win over Camanche. Ries had nine kills and four digs in that match, while Kuper had five kills. Maddie Lambert had 13 assists and four digs, and Caitlyn Cruise had five digs.
Monticello served 95 percent in both the West Branch and Camanche matches.
Those wins put the Panthers into the tournament semifinals against Anamosa. Monticello secured its fourth sweep of the day, winning 25-17, 25-14. Maddie Lambert had 13 assists and five kills, as the offensive attack was spread around. The Panthers had 21 kills as a team, with Cruise and Ries getting four apiece, Rileigh Lambert and Kuper getting three each. Kremer had five digs. Jaelynn Kraus and Kremer each served three aces.
In the championship match, Camanche avenged its earlier loss to the Panthers, with Monticello losing 20-25, 21-25. Kuper and Ries had eight kills each for MHS, as Maddie Lambert had 16 assists. Ries also had nine digs. Kremer served 12-for-12 with two aces.
“I think in the first match (against Camanche in pool play) we controlled the ball better on our side and had more offense,” Breitbach said. “(In the finals), we gave them too many free ball, which allowed them to have a quicker offense against us.
“We are still working on each player knowing their role on the team.”
