Panthers get big wins to finish third at Cascade

In order to become a ranked team, you usually have to beat a ranked team.
The Monticello High School volleyball squad did that, and more, on the way to a third place finish in the season-opening Cascade Tournament Saturday, Aug. 26.
The Panthers opened pool play with victories over North Linn (21-13, 21-10) and Dubuque Senior (21-11, 21-15). Following a two-set loss to Dyersville Beckman, Monticello needed to beat Jesup – ranked eighth in Class 2A – to have hopes of advancing to bracket play.
It turned out to be the key match of the day for the Panthers. After grinding out a 21-15 win in the first set, Monticello had to rally in the second one. Down 10-5, the Panthers reeled off nine straight points. Jesup had a comeback of its own, and from that point the teams were tied six times, all the way up to 22-22.
Then, Shalay Bronemann made a kill, and Jesup hit a ball out of bounds, and the Panthers had a 24-22 win.
“Down the stretch, they remained poised and kept swinging hard on offense,” Breitbach said. “I think that was the difference in that close match; the other team started to tip the ball, and that led us to a more aggressive offensive attack. We also served very well against Jesup (38-for-39 as a team), not making any errors when the match was close.”
Jordan Kuper, who had at least seven kills in each of Monticello’s six matches, posted nine against Jesup, and Lauren Ries had 11. Maddie Lambert made 21 assists, and Corinne Gadient served 12-for-12.
It put the Panthers into the semifinals against Center Point-Urbana. Monticello lost 16-25, 23-25; but bounced back to beat Maquoketa Valley 25-16, 25-13 in the third place match.
“We will continue to work on balancing our offensive attack and switching up the defenses we run,” Breitbach said.
Overall, though the coach was pleased with the finish and her team’s 4-2 start.
“I think they played as a team and never gave up. That is a good foundation to build on,” the coach said. “We have talked about potential on several occasions, and each player has made a commitment to do their very best.”
Midland tourney
– in Monticello
Following an Aug. 31 match at Northeast of Goose Lake, the Panthers will play in the Midland Tournament Saturday, Sept. 2. The tournament has been moved to Monticello because work is being done to Midland’s gym and is not yet completed.
