Throughout this remarkable, first half, 11-1 run for the Monticello High School wrestling team, one theme has prevailed: individual sacrifice equals team success.

“That has been our motto and the main reason we are 11-1 right now,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “Kids are fighting through injuries, making weight adjustments, bumping up weight classes, taking challenge head-on, and just being tough on the mat.

“Every single person on our team has stepped up at one time or another to contribute to our team success.”

The Panthers had more of that success in a quadrangular meet Dec. 21 at Durant, the final meet before the holiday break.

Monticello swept its opponents, winning 66-12 over Durant, 66-18 over Bellevue, and 57-24 over Mid-Prairie.

There were several forfeits in each of the three duals, but the Panthers were able to get some mat action in as well.

Kain Luensman wrestled two matches, winning them by fall, in addition to receiving a forfeit.

Other Panthers who recorded pins included Chase Luensman, Adam Terry, Gavin Holub and Ethan Tallman. Thomas Broderick won a match in the Mid-Prairie dual by technical fall. Alaina Sunlin won a major decision in the Mid-Prairie dual.

Counting forfeit wins, going 3-0 on the night were Kain Luensman, Chase Luensman, Andrew Wall, Bo Kramer, Holub, Tallman and Broderick.

In particular, the Panthers improved in the Mid-Prairie meet. Monticello beat Mid-Prairie 48-36 back on Nov. 30, but this time won by 33.

“We got some guys back on the mat, and that will deepen our lineup,” coach Luensman said. “I felt we controlled the matches we had and took care of business.”

CP-U JV meet

Monticello also competed in the Center Point-Urbana Junior Varsity Invitational Dec. 18. No team scores were kept, but Monticello had seven wrestlers place in the top three of their respective divisions.

Dylan Bowser and Spencer Avery were champions, Ethan Tallman and Andrew Wall took second, and Bo Kramer, Skyler Sharp and Adam Terry were third.
