It was a meet for learning, filling in gaps and seeing where people belong, as the Monticello High School girls track and field team competed in the River Valley Conference Indoor Meet March 21 at the University of Dubuque.

The Panthers finished in a tie for eighth as a team in the meet, a finish coach Vallerie Lynn said the team expects to improve upon in the outdoor season.

“I feel that we are still finding out where kids belong in the lineup,” Lynn said. “We had a lot of freshmen stepping up in this meet to fill spots because of girls that were gone due to spring break. Also a few kids are banged up right now.

“It was a good start, but I have bigger expectations of this team as we head outdoors.”

Lynn said she was pleased with Leah Holub’s third place finish in the 55-meter dash, among other performances.

“Gabby Guilford going 5-5 already in the high jump (to take second place) was an outstanding performance,” Lynn said. “Emma Hynick had two quality 200 legs in our relays.”

Other point-scoring finishes included a fourth place by the 1,600 medley relay team, a sixth from Payton Jaeger in the shot put, and seventh place from Triniti Etzel in the 1,500.

“I am really looking forward to this week,” Lynn concluded. “We have no meet, and we are going to have some great workouts.

“Heading into the outdoor season, I am looking forward to having the whole team back and figuring out who our relay personnel are going to be.”
