Panthers overcome Northeast

BOYS GOLF

Curt Tauke has been coaching the Monticello High School boys golf team for 35 years, but this was a first.

Monticello played its first match of the season despite never having a practice round.

“I don’t think that has ever happened,” Tauke said.

Despite that, the Panthers put up four scores in the 40s April 2, and scored a 180 to 200 win over Northeast of Goose Lake at Plum River in Preston.

Two freshmen led the way. Justin Recker was meet medalist with a 43, and Bo Kramer shot a 44. Nash Sutterman came in with a 45, and Ty Kehoe had a 48.

“The young kids played particularly well,” Tauke said. “Those freshmen are going to make us a deeper team.”

Tauke said the 180 score was better than any nine-hole score the team achieved last season. He added that the team’s goal is to bring that down to 170.

“We hope this is a starting point,” he said. “I’m happy with that performance.”

The Panthers were supposed to play in a tournament at Edgewood April 7, but that was postponed due to poor weather and rescheduled for a week later, April 14.
