Racing mostly larger schools in a competitive environment, the Monticello High School cross country teams put together one of their best performances.

The Panther boys were third, and girls were fourth, in each case racing 11 other teams, during the Western Dubuque Invitational Oct. 1 in Epworth.

The boys had three finishers in the top 15, with Jasper Nietert finishing sixth, Harrison Ahlrichs running 13th and Carter Kurt in 15th. Jacob Miller, who finished 36th, set a personal record by 37 seconds.

Also, he split between the first and fifth runners on the team was the best of the season, 1:12.

“I thought it was our best race of the year,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “It was our most complete performance. Everyone did their part.

“Jasper ran another great race,” Sauser said. “Harrison has been steadily coming along, Carter Kurt had another solid race, and Jacob Miller had his breaking out race.”

Among the larger-school boys’ teams the Panthers defeated were Dubuque Wahlert, Western Dubuque, West Delaware and Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Sauser also praised the girls, who had six runners record season best times in a fourth place team finish. Monticello finished ahead of schools such as Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Prairie and West Delaware in that race.

“The girls had another solid performance,” the coach said. “To get fourth in a pretty loaded field is a confidence-builder.”

Emma Althoff led the team with a ninth place finish. Triniti Etzel set a season best time by 42 seconds while finishing 20th. Karle Kramer was 24th, and Lydia Recker ran 28th.

“Emma has been leading us all year. We always know what we’re going to get from Emma. And Triniti really came out and had her best race of the year.”

In the junior varsity girls’ race, the Panthers finished fifth. Mya Postel finished eighth individually, and would have been fifth on the varsity team, setting a PR by 13 seconds. Six girls ran season best times; Kehde Campbell topped hers by 2:14.

For the JB boys, who also finished fifth, Jayden Orcutt knocked 26 seconds off his personal record, Erlin Bell had a PR by two seconds, and Nathan Sauser set a PR by 58 seconds. Walker Spence continued his streak of setting a season best time with every race.
