The Monticello High School football team passed out awards, talked about its 3-6 season, and discussed future plans during the team’s annual awards meeting Thursday, Nov. 10 in the MHS Auditorium.
Head coach Wes Wilson commented on the season, and in particular the key injuries team members suffered.
“It’s something I’ve never been a part of, having so many key injuries,” Wilson told the audience. “We were scrambling. But I’m proud of how they responded. They could have just pitched it in, but they didn’t. They worked hard.
     “Everybody was ‘all in.’ ”
Wilson discussed the many team records the 2016 squad set, most of them involving junior running back Max Keleher, who set a record by rushing for 1,377 yards in a season. Keleher also set records for most rushing yards in a game (403), longest rushing touchdown (98), touchdowns in a game (7), and carries in a game (53). All of those were set in the victory over Oelwein.
Clayton Kraus set a school record for most sacks for a season, with 10.
There were two team records set: 514 offensive yards in a game, and 488 rushing yards in a game, both against Oelwein.
Junior varsity coach Greg Williams also commended his team for the season it had.
“They got better all year,” Williams said. “They never gave up.”
