Despite a couple days of sun and wind leading up to the Monticello Invitational Cross Country Meet, there were concerns about a soggy course and slow times due to the heavy rains earlier in the week.

Those concerns proved to be groundless, at least from Monticello’s standpoint. Despite the occasional muddy patch, every member of the Panther team recorded a season-best time at the meet, held Sept. 8 at Monticello High School.

“I think it was very successful,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort the kids gave at the meet. It didn’t slow them down at all.”

Monticello took third in the 14-team boys’ varsity race, scoring 93 points to finish behind Tipton (40) and Western Dubuque (74). Cole Cruise led the way with an 11th place finish in 17 minutes, 47 seconds. Jasper Nietert, David Titman, Zach Chapman and Daltyn Kramer all finished below the 19-minute mark, while Carter Kurt and Austin Timm both beat 20 minutes. Nietert and Chapman had personal record times.

“The guys are rolling right now,” Sauser said.

The girls were sixth in a loaded field that included six ranked teams.

“Our girls ran well,” the coach said. “They all had season-best times, ranging anywhere from 45 seconds to two minutes.”

Karle Kramer finished 12th individually, knocking 1:34 off her season best time with a finish in 21:13. Gabrielle Steiner shaved 1:17 off her season best, and was 19th in 21:25. Lydia Recker finished under 22 minutes in 21:58, followed by Emily Schlarmann, Triniti Etzel, Makenna Patterson and Dru Kramer, who had a personal record time.

In the junior varsity races, Monticello’s boys were fourth and the girls were sixth. Levi Temple finished 11th in the boys’ JV race, and was one of four Panthers to run a PR time, along with Gavin Baugh, Jayden Orcutt and Keegan Glawatz.

Gabby Guilford finished seventh in the girls’ JV race in 24:34, earning a varsity spot for the next meet. Kehde Campbell set a PR by about 3:30, and was 5:32 faster than her previous season-best time.

Site Friday to

be determined

Monticello is scheduled to run in the Cascade Invitational Friday, Sept. 14 at Fillmore Fairways, but the meet might be moved back to Monticello due to soggy conditions at Fillmore.

That decision had not been made at press time; watch the Express Facebook page for updates.
