Winning a team golf tournament is nice; repeating that title the following year makes it that much better.

The Monticello High School girls golf team successfully defended its title at the Easton Valley Invitational, winning the tournament held May 3 at Plum River in Preston.

The Panthers scored 371 to win by three strokes over Maquoketa. Lisbon was a distant third at 414 in the six-team tournament.

Marissa McNally shot a 45-46–91 to finish second individually, behind Carlene Paul of Maquoketa, who scored an 88. Dru Kramer won a tie-breaker to finish third and Beka Prull was fourth, each with a 92. Lydia Franzenburg rounded out the team scoring with a 96.

“Marissa played great to finish second overall.” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. Beka didn’t play very well on her first nine but shot a 41 on the back.”

Earlier in the week, the Panthers traveled to Bellevue for a dual meet. Bellevue had just two golfers, so no team score. Monticello shot 201.

“I think the wet conditions didn’t help our scores, but overall we played consistent,” Steen said.

Prull was meet medalist with a 44, Franzenburg shot a 50, McNally had 52, and Kramer totaled 55.

The Panthers were scheduled to compete in the River Valley Conference Tournament May 8 at Muscatine, but on Monday it was announced the meet would be postponed to Friday, May 10, due to predicted heavy rains.

Monticello will then compete in first round regionals May 13 in Dyersville.
