Mostly, it was just good to have the full team back.

A season in which 16 runners had either been quarantined or missed meets for other reason returned to a sense of normalcy Saturday, Sept. 26, as the Panther cross country teams ran in the Anamosa Invitational at Anamosa Middle School.

“It was good to get everybody back,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. That included the coach himself, who had his own COVID issues and had not attended a meet since Sept. 3 in Iowa City.

“We’re used to having the time to develop as a team.”

Monticello’s teams both took fifth place at Anamosa, in a meet dominated by Solon, which won both varsity and both junior varsity divisions.

The Panther girls scored 124 points, led by Emma Althoff, who was ninth overall. Karle Kramer, Triniti Etzel and Lydia Recker were also in the top 30.

Thirteen of the 15 Panther girls who ran had season-best times, and Jackie Stadtmueller, who ran in the JV race, had a personal record time. Savannah Freese had the Panthers’ best JV time, which would have been good enough for sixth on the team in the varsity race.

“I was real pleased with the overall effort,” Sauser said. “Triniti Etzel had a really good individual performance, and Savannah Freese has shown huge growth from last year to this year.”

Monticello’s boys scored 126, and had 19 season-best times. Four of those were personal bests, by Jacob Miller, Ian Temple, Nathan Oswald and Erlin Bell.

Jasper Nietert finished eighth individually, and Zach Chapman was 20th. Harrison Ahlrichs and Jacob Miller were in the top 40.

“We could have maybe crept up a little bit (in the team placing), but I knew they ran well. I was pleased with the overall performance,” Sauser said.

Dylan Ponder led the team in the boys’ JV race, placing fifth overall.

Monticello was second as a team in both JV races.
